So you may be thinking what have Lady Gaga and the Church have in common? Well apart from the obvious title, Judas, the video is riddled with religious iconography. The opening scene depicts the twelve apostles riding as Hell’s Angels clad in leather and riding motorcycles, turning the classic image of the apostles on its head.
Lady Gaga goes on to enter a ‘New Jerusalem’, accompanied by a Latino Jesus. Lady Gaga is wearing Royal Blue, a colour used by artists to depict royalty, and particularly the Virgin Mary, who is also known as ‘Our Lady’ and the Mother of Christ. Lady Ga Ga is also known to her fans as, Mother Monster…
Gaga is also seen wearing an enormous heart around her neck resembling the Sacred Heart, which is seen in many religious paintings.
Gaga also plays the part of Mary Magdalene; again colour distinguishes her role here, as Mary Magdalene is generally depicted in paintings wearing red.
Of course Gaga’s outfit is subversive, and as always, revealing, however it is widely believed that Mary was a prostitute, who gave up her wicked ways to become a follower Christ. In Lady Gaga’s new video Marry the night, we see a fallen woman saved by her music, bringing a message of hope. Mary Magdalene is also a patroness of wayward women, and a charity called ‘Magdalene Women Houses’, helping many women off the streets, and into a better life. Although many have condemned the video for being blasphemous, and disrespectful, I think she is trying to send out a positive message. Many find solace in Lady Gaga’s music, and view her as a role model. She embraces her flaws, and preaches the idea of loving one’s self, and that its ok to be different.
